We install travertine and concrete pavers side by side, often on the same property, so we have no reason to push you toward one. The right answer depends on where the surface goes, how much sun it takes, and what you want to spend up front.
Heat. This is the one that decides most Phoenix projects. Travertine is a natural stone that reflects solar energy rather than storing it, and it stays noticeably cooler underfoot than a concrete paver of the same colour in the same sun. On a pool deck or a west-facing patio, that difference is the difference between using the space in July and not. If the surface will be walked on barefoot, travertine wins on heat almost every time.
Cost. Concrete pavers are generally the more affordable option on material, and the gap widens on large areas like driveways. Travertine costs more per square foot, but it is a natural stone with the look to match — most people spending it are buying the appearance and the temperature, not just a walking surface.
Load. Pavers are the right call for anything vehicles drive on. Driveways, driveway extensions and RV pads should be concrete pavers over a deep compacted base with edge restraint. Travertine is a patio, deck and walkway material; we do not recommend it under a truck.
Durability and repair. Both are repairable in a way concrete never is — if a section settles or a unit stains, it lifts and resets. Concrete pavers are harder and more chip-resistant at the edges. Travertine is softer stone; it can etch from harsh chemicals and will show wear sooner at high-traffic corners, though a sealed joint and normal cleaning keep it looking right for years.
Appearance. Travertine reads high-end and works with the colours already in a desert landscape — creams, walnuts, silvers. Pavers come in more colours and patterns and can be matched tightly to a house's existing hardscape. Both look better with a border or soldier course than without one; that detail is cheap and it is what separates a finished patio from a field of stone.
Our general guidance: travertine on pool decks, patios and anywhere people go barefoot. Pavers on driveways, RV pads, and large utility areas. Plenty of yards get both — a travertine patio with paver stepping stones cut through the turf, or a paver driveway with a travertine entry.
